Frequently Asked Questions
The lawyer with whom you have your initial consultation will usually be your primary counsel, but complex files are team-based. On a serious matter you can expect a senior lawyer to direct strategy, an associate to handle day-to-day disclosure review and articled students to handle court appearances, and, where appropriate, specialist input on forensic, immigration, or regulatory issues. If you wish a particular lawyer to handle your file and they are available, you may request a particular lawyer.
Look for experience in the specific charge you face; admission to the BC bar and current membership in the Law Society of BC (check the Law Society lawyer lookup directory); a clear written retainer agreement; someone whose communication style you understand; and a realistic assessment of your case rather than promises of a specific outcome. Do not decide based on price alone. Many excellent lawyers undercharge for their work while many less-experienced and successful lawyers may charge more. Price is not a good indicator of the quality of lawyer.
Any paperwork from your arrest or release: the Promise to Appear or Undertaking, the release order or recognizance of bail, any charge documents (Information), the police report if you have received one, and a list of your bail conditions. If you have received any disclosure already, have that handy. If you have a prior criminal record, have the dates and convictions handy, as well as any tickets you’ve received and a copy of your driving record. And have your court dates, treatment dates, and employment obligation information handy so we can plan realistically.
We do not take legal aid cases.
Yes. We will travel anywhere in British Columbia or Yukon to assist with your case.
