Paul Doroshenko, K.C.
Paul Doroshenko, K.C. is one of British Columbia’s most accomplished and recognized criminal defence lawyers, with a career defined by tenacity, legal innovation, and an unwavering commitment to his clients. Since being called to the Bar of British Columbia in May 2000, Paul has built a reputation as a fierce and principled advocate who has successfully defended over ten thousand cases across the province — a record that speaks for itself.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Alberta in 1996 and his LL.B. in 1999, Paul launched his legal career in Vancouver before founding Acumen Law Corporation in 2008. Under his leadership, Acumen has grown into a respected firm with offices in Vancouver, Richmond, and Abbotsford, specializing in criminal defence, driving law, and administrative law. Paul’s firm has become the go-to destination for clients facing serious criminal charges or driving-related legal matters anywhere in British Columbia.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the legal profession, Paul was appointed King’s Counsel — one of the highest honours bestowed upon members of the Canadian bar. The designation reflects not only his legal expertise but his standing as a leader within the profession.
Paul is widely regarded as one of Canada’s foremost authorities on DUI and impaired driving law. A prominent and outspoken critic of British Columbia’s Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) regime, he has co-authored legal papers on the subject and delivered presentations to the BC Trial Lawyers Association and the Canadian Bar Association. His expertise has taken him to legal seminars across North America, including in Alberta, Quebec, Texas, California, Illinois, and South Carolina. He is a board member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association and holds active membership in the National College for DUI Defense, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the California DUI Lawyers Association, and the Trial Lawyers Association of BC. Several of his cases have set legal precedents that continue to shape the law across Canada.
Paul’s technical knowledge sets him apart from other criminal defence lawyers. He has completed police training for Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and Drug Recognition Evaluations in accordance with NHTSA guidelines, and maintains an extensive personal collection of police breath-testing and drug-analysis equipment. This hands-on understanding of enforcement technology allows him to identify weaknesses in the Crown’s evidence that other lawyers might miss.
Beyond his courtroom achievements, Paul is a dedicated teacher and mentor. He develops and delivers in-house training courses at Acumen Law, and regularly presents to professional associations across the country. He is active on social media, including TikTok, where he shares legal insights with the public in an accessible, engaging way — reflecting his belief that people deserve to understand the law that governs their lives.
Outside the law, Paul Doroshenko is a man of wide-ranging passions. A gifted songwriter and vocalist, Paul writes and records original country music — a creative outlet that reflects both his storytelling instincts and his deep appreciation for authenticity. His love of classic cars is equally well known among friends and colleagues; Paul is a skilled mechanic who personally maintains and restores vintage automobiles, combining a craftsman’s attention to detail with a genuine passion for automotive history. He is also an accomplished carpenter, welder, and distiller — having recently co-founded a craft distillery — and is known around the office for cooking meals for his team, bringing the same care and generosity to his personal relationships that he brings to his clients’ cases.
Paul Doroshenko, K.C. supports free markets, competition, compassion, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. He has ran for election as a Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia, demonstrating his commitment to shaping the future of the legal profession at the highest levels of governance.
Whether in the courtroom, the recording studio, or the garage, Paul Doroshenko brings the same qualities to everything he does: skill, passion, and a determination to get it right.
